Delegates from 10 countries gathered for the 3rd ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit, held in conjunction with the ASEAN Medical Research Network Meeting from 11 to 13 September at NUS. The ASEAN Medical Research Network was established to promote collaboration among leading medical schools in the region and to advance the medical education and health systems as a community by 2015.
The delegates discussed progress and updates on the ASEAN Medical Research Network and medical education curriculum. Challenges facing the region—communicable diseases (such as HIV, dengue haemorrhagic fever, tuberculosis and malaria) and non-communicable diseases (such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and ageing)—were also examined.
A-TRACTION (Asian Tuberculosis Research and Clinical Trials Integrated Organisational Network) project was presented by SPRINT-TB Lead Prof. Paton to the summit delegates. The project was identified as one of the top tier priority projects for ASEAN collaboration. Receiving follow up interest from 5 ASEAN member countries, SPRINT-TB is looking forward for productive collaboration in building and expanding the A-TRACTION network.
