About the Speaker: Prof.Haynes obtained his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry in 1970 from the University of Western Australia, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany and Imperial College, London. After appointments at Monash University and University of Sydney, he moved to the Chemistry Department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1993 and took up an appointment at the Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences, North-West University, South Africa in 2012. Prof. Haynes served as an external member of the Chemotherapy of Malaria Committee, Tropical Diseases research (TDR), WHO, Geneva (1993-97) and on the Drug Discovery Research Committee, TDR/WHO (1998-2002). He collaborated on the artesunate formulation project with TDR/WHO and participated in the Australian Govt. AusAID Vietnam Malaria Control Project. In collaboration with Bayer AG, Leverkusen (1995-2007), he worked on development of the new artemisinin derivative artemisone. He is author of some 163 publications , 3 book chapters, has 38 patents, and has authored consulting reports for TDR/WHO, government agencies and industry.
